The Definitive Guide to Period Discs (Beginner’s Edition)

The Definitive Guide to Period Discs (Beginner’s Edition)

Period shouldn’t disrupt your life. This should be a basic understanding of human autonomy and dignity. Yet for centuries, women have had to accept the limitations of traditional period products. The period care industry got too lazy and complacent to innovate for the sake of its own users.

Why existing period solutions fail you

Yes, we know pads are the safe option…

A sanitary pad is the most beginner friendly choice. You may have known them since the first day of bleeding. As they are within our comfort zone, your tendency is to defend them at all cost, even though they tend to leak sideways, are not at all comfortable for sports, downright limit our bodily movements, and prevent you from putting on cute, active outfits.

Tampons allow for a little more motion…

When you get a little bolder and more comfortable with your body, you introduce tampons to your period care routine. It is amazing to not have to think about your period for a few hours. You’re free!

Oh, but there’s a catch. You have to find a bathroom every four hours to change them. You let their strings hang out of your swimsuits. Sometimes you struggle to put them in because of the dry friction. And just imagine the last days of your period when you have to pull out a dry tampon. Then you learn about the heightened risk of TSS associated with tampons – it becomes so much LESS fun, and you can’t sleep through the night for 12 hours anymore.

Menstrual cups are amazing, except…

Then you discover the menstrual cups – the closest thing to period freedom. It holds twice the capacity of a tampon. It is invisible and lasts up to twelve hours, depending on your flow. It leaves no microtears on the vaginal walls and doesn’t dry you out. You can sleep in a cute tiny slip dress.

Finally your microbiome can take a deep breath instead of flaming up every once in a while. But, it is not always convenient to empty the cup in a public bathroom – you can’t carry it to a public sink where everyone can see your blood splashing around. It takes effort to boil it every month, or to carry a mild soap around in case you need it.

We hate to see you compromise your bodily autonomy. We hate to see women alienating themselves from their own natural functions out of the limits of the existing products.

The SmoothDisc™ changes the game

12 hours of freedom

Our signature Smooth® 12-hour Period Disc lives up to its name. With the capacity of 56ml - which is 5 times what a standard tampon can absorb - you can wear it for up to 12 hours, even on heavy flow days. Less disruption to your schedule, more time to do what you love.

Single use, fully biodegradable

You don’t have to make a mess in a public bathroom or worry about how you’re going to boil your disc on a trip. The SmoothDisc™ allows you the convenience of single use products. But this is the amazing part: it biodegrades and disappears within 5 years after you toss it in the trash. So you can enjoy the convenience while reducing your ecological footprint to zero.

Have sex on your period – minus the blood

The SmoothDisc™ creates a thin basin that sits inside your vaginal fornix, leaving your vaginal canal unobstructed for penetrative sex during your period, without the blood. No, it doesn’t replace a condom. And no, your partner cannot feel it, either.

One size for all Asian bodies

Asian women have a cervical position sitting at 9-21% lower than their Caucasian counterparts. This is why traditional Western-imported bell-shaped menstrual cups often lead to sizing failures, such as leaking and abdominal pain. We already fixed this problem with our pioneering Cocmau® Menstrual Cup. But we wanted to push the solution one step further.

Because of its placement, the SmoothDisc™ does not depend on your cervical position. Its flexible rim fits inside your vaginal fornix which is a static vault, bypassing the dependence on your cervical position and your pelvic tone. One size fits all Asian bodies – no need to guess your size.

Okay, period discs sound amazing, what’s the catch?

As the SmoothDisc™ is an internally worn product, it requires you to have an intimate familiarity with your own body. You will need to reach inside to place, secure, adjust, and remove it. So be prepared for a learning curve.

The good news is that unlike menstrual cups, SmoothDisc™ does not rely on a suction seal. It anchors behind your pelvic bone as if a book resting on the shelf. Insertion and removal are, thus, a breeze. Most users take 1-2 cycles to get themselves adjusted to the SmoothDisc™, compared to 1-3 cycles with a bell-shaped menstrual cup.

But… What if I hate blood?

Some users started out being discouraged from the sight of their own blood. It does look like a scene. But we have not met anyone who hasn’t fallen in love with their own bodies ever since. It’s a transformation right before our eyes, when one goes from weary and afraid to emboldened, aware, affectionate to themselves. No amount of persuasion can bring about that transformation: only true, loving contact with the reality of your body can do that to you. For the first time, you can see that you are, in fact, a life force, manifested.

Technically speaking, a period disc prevents your flow from contact with air. It slows down the oxidizing process, so when you remove the disc, your flow doesn’t smell even after 12 hours. Normally, pads and tampons absorb period fluid then expose it to air, which leads to that uncomfortable smell and darkened blood clots. With SmoothDisc™, your flow remains a warm, red, pleasant fluid.

Why would I even want to have sex on my period?

Great question. Because you know… lots of women do. For centuries the medical industry plus society have gaslit you into doubting your own desires. They told you that sexual arousal only peaks during the ovulation phase, to prime you for conception. But the female body is far more magical than a conception machine. You are wired from head to toe for pleasure.

Recent discoveries have established that women have a secondary sexual peak during their period. There are a few theories behind this. First, period sex is adventurous, fun, and good for bonding. Second, it brings you multiple orgasms, which contracts then relaxes your uterus, sedating your system with a cocktail of feel-good hormones. Orgasms reduce your period pain and might be able to shorten your period by ¼ days.

How do you even use a period disc?

This is how insert a period disc

Step 1: Insert. Pinch the disc in the middle to create an 8-shape. Then find a comfortable position. You can insert your disc either standing with a leg up, squatting, or sitting on the toilet. Remember to relax your pelvic floor muscles. It is simple: just imagine your whole pelvic area as loose as possible, and your body will follow.

Step 2: Push. Push your toward your tailbone as far back as possible. Your disc will snap inside your vaginal fornix.

Step 3: Tuck. Don’t forget to “lock” it behind your pelvic bone by pushing the disc rim upward. You’re all set!

Watch the visual demonstration below:

What is it like during weartime?

You can wear your disc for up to twelve hours. But no more than that. Most users compare the experience to a normal day: that they almost forget that they are on their period. Products that work should, of course, be invisible in your life.

Some users experience autodumping when they use the bathroom. It is not a leak. Your disc may slip out of the pelvic bone when you bear down sitting on the toilet. This autodump feature empties your disc and resets the capacity for the day.

When you stand up, it might slip back into position. But if not, you can give it the rim a slight push to pop it back up behind your pelvic bone.

The autodump feature looks like this:

It’s time to remove your disc

Removal is a one-motion process. Just sit on the toilet, hook your finger below the disc rim and pull it downward, then straight out.

You can slightly bear down with your pelvic bone first to autodump your disc, so you create less of a mess on your hand.

Either way, after you get your disc out, toss it in the trash bin – never flush it down the toilet.

Removal looks like this:

I have some more questions on period sex!

Does the SmoothDisc™ slip out or leak during sex?

Our users have confirmed that the disc neither slips out nor leaks. The disc sits at the vaginal fornix and doesn’t block the vaginal canal. It was engineered to be similar to the cervical cap, which sits perfectly in place during sex. So the mechanism of PIV penetration does not interfere with its position.

Does the SmoothDisc™ replace a condom?

Absolutely not. The SmoothDisc™ is for use with your trusted partners only. It is a period product, and does not prevent STIs or the risk of pregnancy.

Can I use the SmoothDisc™ with a condom?

A male condom, yes. A female condom, no – as the friction between the female condom and the SmoothDisc™ can tear your female condom.

What’s the risk of conception during my period?

The chance of conception during your period is the lowest compared to the rest of your cycle.

If you have a cycle with normal length (bleeding happens every 21-35 days), the chance of conception is low. As semen lives up to 5-7 days inside the environment of your uterus and ovulation will not happen for at least another week after your period.

If you have an unpredictable cycle or a short cycle (bleeding happens less than every 21 days), then your ovulation can occur early, and semen can still be active by then.

As a rule of thumb, ovulation always happens 2 weeks before your next period.

Where can I buy SmoothDisc™?

SmoothDisc™ took the engineering of the normal period disc and elevated it with the latest medical grade TPU technology. As Asia’s first biodegradable, single-use period disc, supplies adapt to our current roll-out phases and are limited to our online store and certain e-commerce channels. Grab it before we’re out of stock or your next period arrives.
